Sport Overview
The Cross Country Program
At Guildford Grammar School, Cross Country is more than simply running; it is a program that develops resilience, determination and the confidence to embrace challenges. Through structured training, competitive racing and a supportive team environment, students learn the importance of commitment, perseverance and personal growth. The program encourages students to set goals, push beyond their comfort zones and develop habits that contribute to success both on the course and beyond the sporting field.
The GGS Cross Country program provides opportunities for students across the School to participate, develop their abilities and represent their School at a variety of competitive levels. With a focus on participation, improvement and excellence, students of all abilities are encouraged to be involved and experience the rewards of distance running.
Students develop key physical qualities including endurance, speed, strength and running technique, while also building important personal attributes such as discipline, resilience and mental toughness. The program provides a strong foundation for students preparing for competition, winter sport and broader athletic development.
Boys in Years 10–12 compete in the weekly PSA Cross Country competition during Terms 2 and 3, challenging themselves against some of Western Australia’s strongest school runners. Following a selection process based on performance, girls in Years 7–12 may also be invited to represent GGS in PSA Cross Country events, while boys in Years 7–9 have the opportunity to participate as an additional sport program.
The annual House Cross Country Carnival is a highlight of the School sporting calendar, providing all students in Years 7–12 with the opportunity to compete for their House, contribute to team success and celebrate the spirit of participation and community. The carnival also acts as the selection event for the GGS team that represents the School at the ACC Cross Country Carnival.
For younger students, Run Club is offered to boys and girls in Years 4–6 throughout Terms 2 and 3. The program introduces students to the fundamentals of distance running while developing technique, endurance, speed and confidence in preparation for winter sport and school cross-country events.
Through a combination of participation, performance and personal development, Cross Country at Guildford Grammar School provides students with the opportunity to challenge themselves, build lasting connections and discover the rewards of striving for their personal best.
