Sport Overview

THE Strength & Conditioning Program

At Guildford Grammar School, our Strength and Conditioning program is an integral part of student athletic development, helping students become stronger, more resilient and well-rounded athletes. The program supports performance for all Year 7-12 students across all sports while developing lifelong habits that promote health, wellbeing and physical confidence.

Based in the Barber Fitness Centre, our on-campus facility provides students with access to structured strength and conditioning and rehabilitation programs designed to enhance performance, reduce injury risk and support recovery. Sessions are available before and after school from Monday to Thursday during term, with additional training opportunities offered throughout the school holidays, ensuring students have consistent access to support across the year.

Every session is supervised by qualified Strength and Conditioning staff and is tailored to the individual needs of each student. Programs are age-appropriate and consider a student’s training history, stage of physical development and the specific demands of their chosen sport, allowing every athlete to train safely, effectively and with purpose.

The program is designed to support students at every stage of their sporting journey—not just those competing at the highest level. Whether a student is new to organised sport, striving for PSA First Team selection or pursuing representative pathways, the focus remains on developing movement quality, strength, power, speed, resilience and confidence in a positive and supportive environment.

Beyond physical preparation, students are encouraged to understand the importance of recovery, nutrition, sleep and consistent training habits. By developing these behaviours alongside their physical capabilities, students gain the tools to perform at their best both on and off the field.

The Strength and Conditioning and Rehabilitation program underpins sport across the Senior School, working alongside every sporting code to prepare students for the demands of training and competition while helping them reach their individual potential as healthy, capable and well-rounded athletes.

Program Essentials

Equipment

GGS Sports uniform

Any GGS Sports uniform may be worn for sessions in the Barber Fitness Centre. Eg; Warm up top, Navy Polo, House Polo, Football Singlet etc.

Footwear

Appropriate enclosed footwear is compulsory whenever in the Barber Fitness Centre.

HYDRATION & sweat towel

A water bottle and sweat towel are compulsory for all strength and conditioning sessions.

Rehab & Injury Support

Returning to Sport After Injury

Students with injuries receive structured, supervised support to maintain conditioning, connection to their sport and a safe path back to full participation.

Barber Fitness Centre Rehab

Supervised Gym Rehab

Two dedicated supervised rehab sessions run each week in the Barber Fitness Centre for students carrying physio programs. All activities are informed by the student’s own physiotherapist or sports doctor – the School’s S&C staff implement the program, not design it.

Pool & Movement Rehab

Water & Wellness Rehab

Pool-based rehab and Movement & Wellness program rehab are also available depending on the nature and level of the injury. These options are particularly suited to students who cannot yet load in the gym but need to maintain movement and fitness.

Team Connection

Staying Involved While Injured

Students with injuries that prevent fixture participation continue to attend training and games to maintain their connection to the sport and the team. They often assist with team administration and support roles – staying engaged and part of the program throughout their recovery.

Medical Centre

If Your Child Is Injured

Report injuries to the supervising coach or staff member immediately. For suspected concussion, the student sits out without exception. The School Medical Centre operates Monday-Friday 7:00am-6:00pm. The on-call number for after-hours support during off-campus sport is (08) 9377 9211.
