The Rowing Program

The GGS Boat Shed is the heart of one of Western Australia’s most respected school rowing programs. Located on campus along the picturesque bend of the Swan River and overlooking historic Woodbridge House, the Boat Shed is more than a training venue — it is where students develop resilience, discipline, teamwork and a lifelong connection to the sport of rowing.

For more than three decades, the rowing program has been shaped by the expertise and leadership of Tony Lovrich — Olympian (1984), Olympic Coach (1996), Kings Cup stalwart and inductee into the West Australian Rowing Hall of Fame. His influence, combined with the dedication of an outstanding coaching team, has created a culture that produces not only technically skilled athletes, but young people defined by commitment, work ethic and determination.

Guildford Grammar School Rowing has a proud tradition of success, with outstanding PSA and All Schools Regatta results reflecting the strength of the program and the culture established within the Boat Shed. Students are challenged to achieve their best while learning the values of preparation, perseverance and taking pride in their effort — qualities that extend well beyond the river.

The rowing program provides opportunities for both boys and girls across a structured pathway from junior development through to senior competition. Boys’ Rowing operates during the summer season in Terms 1 and 4, with students competing in PSA regattas. Girls’ Rowing runs during the winter season in Terms 2 and 3, with athletes competing in events including the Canning Bridge Classic, All Schools Regattas and the WA State Championships.

Training takes place from the Boat Shed on the Swan River and combines on-water rowing with ergometer sessions, strength and conditioning, and technical land-based preparation. Junior athletes build their skills through progressive training programs, while senior crews undertake intensive preparation designed to support high-level competition.
