Sport Overview
The Hockey Program
At GGS, hockey is offered as a winter sport, providing students with opportunities to train, compete and develop throughout the season.
The GGS Hockey program is designed to foster a love of the game while supporting every player to reach their individual potential. Through experienced coaching, structured skill development and competitive match play, students are encouraged to build confidence, challenge themselves and contribute positively to their team.
The program provides a clear pathway for students from Years 5–12, supporting players from their first experience of competitive hockey through to senior representative opportunities. Students in Years 5 and 6 begin their hockey journey by competing in the JPSSA competition, where the focus is on developing fundamental skills, game understanding, confidence and enjoyment in a supportive environment.
As students progress into the Senior School, they enter a structured and progressive program designed to support players of all abilities, from those new to the sport through to experienced club and representative athletes. Boys in Years 7–12 compete in the PSA Hockey Competition whilst the Girls compete in the Hockey WA Competition, with fixtures scheduled according to age group: Years 7–8 on Saturdays, Years 9–10 on Sunday mornings and Years 11–12 on Friday Nights. Selected senior girls also represent GGS in the ACC Hockey Challenge Competition.
Weekly training sessions are tailored to each age group and stage of development, ensuring students receive age-appropriate coaching that progressively builds technical skills, tactical understanding, game awareness, fitness and confidence. As players move through the program, increasing emphasis is placed on leadership, decision-making and performance preparation while continuing to foster a strong sense of teamwork and enjoyment.
Across the program, the emphasis extends beyond winning. GGS Hockey is committed to developing players who enjoy the game, strive for continual improvement and demonstrate commitment, resilience, respect and sportsmanship. Students are encouraged to embrace challenges, support their teammates and contribute positively to the culture of the program, developing qualities that extend well beyond the hockey field.
Whether students are picking up a hockey stick for the first time or competing at an elite level, the GGS Hockey program provides a positive, inclusive environment where every player can grow, contribute and enjoy the lifelong benefits of being part of a team.
