Sport Overview

The Basketball Program

At Guildford Grammar School, Basketball is offered through Terms 1 and 4, providing students with opportunities to learn, train, compete and grow at every stage of their basketball journey. While the game itself sits at the centre of the program, we believe basketball is ultimately a vehicle for developing young people. The lessons learned through sport—commitment, resilience,  and teamwork —often have a far greater impact than the result on a scoreboard.

The GGS Basketball program is founded on the belief that improvement is a process. We recognise that skill acquisition takes time and that meaningful development occurs when students are consistently challenged in an environment that values respect, effort, and persistence. Our coaching philosophy emphasises the mastery of fundamentals, decision-making and game understanding, allowing players to develop not only how to perform a skill, but when and why to use it. Through deliberate practice, meaningful repetition and guided discovery, students are encouraged to think, adapt and become lifelong learners of the game.

Basketball at GGS caters for boys and girls from Years 5–12, providing a clear pathway from junior participation through to senior representation in PSA, ACC and other club competitions. At every level, students are supported to maximise their individual growth while understanding their role within the team environment. We value development and encourage players to focus on becoming the best version of themselves.

Training sessions and competition opportunities are designed to progressively develop technical proficiency, tactical awareness and basketball intelligence. As players mature, increasing emphasis is placed on communication, adaptability and decision-making. We want players to be confident, creative and capable problem-solvers who can transfer what they learn in training into game situations.

Whilst we strive to be competitive and encourage the highest standards in all that we do, winning is not our sole measure of success. Success is also reflected in a student’s willingness to embrace challenges, respond positively to setbacks, support their teammates and commit to continual improvement. We believe that a growth mindset, combined with consistent effort and reflection, creates the foundation for both athletic and personal achievement.

Basketball provides a powerful environment for character development. Through training and competition, students learn the value of discipline, responsibility, selflessness and respect. They experience the rewards of collective effort, develop meaningful relationships and gain an understanding of what it means to contribute to something larger than themselves. These experiences help shape confident, resilient young people who are prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie beyond school.

Ultimately, the purpose of basketball at Guildford Grammar School extends beyond competition. We view the game as a vehicle for learning—one that teaches students how to think, adapt, collaborate and persevere in pursuit of meaningful goals. By focusing on both skill development and character formation, we aim to develop capable players, strong teammates and young people who are equipped to flourish in sport, school and life.

Shawn Stone

Head of Basketball

Shawn Stone joined Guildford Grammar as Head of Basketball in 2024. He saw the School as the ideal place to unite ambition with opportunity, and to shape a culture where players grow both on and off the court.

His focus is on building a competitive program that also values individual development. Shawn believes that basketball can help students develop resilience, discipline and confidence, with competition and personal growth working hand in hand.

Drawing on global networks and constant study of coaching trends, Shawn brings fresh ideas and practices to his teams. Looking ahead, he is excited to see both boys’ and girls’ programs embrace a culture of excellence, where skill and spirit combine to create lasting success.
