Sport Overview

The Athletics Program

Athletics is a cornerstone of sport at Guildford Grammar School, with opportunities for every student from Kindy to Year 12, totalling eight athletics carnivals at both school and inter school level.

Our Prep School program provides an exceptional foundation in Athletics. Students are first exposed to the sport in Kindy, and by the time they reach Year 4, have the opportunity to participate in up to 12 track and field events, offering a broader experience than is typically available in primary schools. Throughout Terms 2 and 3, students develop their running, jumping and throwing skills in a supportive environment that complements participation in other sports while encouraging confidence, skill development and a lifelong enjoyment of Athletics.

For students in Years 7–12, the Athletics program includes two to three training sessions each week across a 19-week season, preparing students for the ACC and PSA Athletics Carnivals. Guildford Grammar School is proud to offer one of the most experienced school athletics coaching teams in Western Australia. Led by coaches including Grant Ward, Danny Kevan, Ebony Talbert, Cathy Connolly, Alex De Silva, Aven Drewett and Cody O’Brien, our coaching staff bring extensive experience across elite competition, with many having competed and/or coached athletes at an international level, as well as holding tertiary qualifications in teaching and/or sports science and facilitating coach education for the National Athletics body.

Competition pathways ensure students are challenged and rewarded at every stage of their development. Prep students represent Guildford at IPSHA and JPSSA competitions, gaining valuable experience in inter school Athletics from an early age. Students in Years 3-6 who qualify for IPSHA and JPSSA representative teams attend specialised training throughout Term 3 in preparation for their championship carnivals. In the Senior School, girls compete in ACC Athletics, while boys represent Guildford in both the PSA and ACC competitions – two of the most competitive school Athletics competitions in Western Australia.

The strength of our program is reflected in its results. In 2025, our Year 3-6 team won the IPSHA Athletics Carnival, while our Year 7-12 team claimed Overall Champion School, Junior Girls Champion School, Junior Boys Champion School, and Senior Boys Champion School at the ACC Division B Athletics Carnival. Guildford was also ranked number one among all 78 ACC schools in the 2025 ACC Virtual Athletics Carnival, which combines results from all 10 divisional carnivals.

These achievements earned Guildford Grammar School promotion to the ACC Division A Athletics Carnival in 2026, placing our students in the highest level of private co-educational school Athletics competition in Western Australia.

Coaching & Staff

Rebecca Del Pup

Head of Athletics

Rebecca commenced coaching Athletics at Guildford Grammar School in 2015, before becoming Head Coach in 2025 and Head of Athletics in 2026. Along with 14 years coaching experience, Rebecca has a longstanding involvement in Athletics through various capacities; as an athlete participating in the sport from the age of 6, to community club committee and state team management roles, and various coordinator roles with Athletics West, the ACC, and current position with Australian Athletics as a Coach Education Facilitator. Rebecca brings knowledge from her tertiary qualifications in Exercise and Sports Science, and accreditations in Strength and Conditioning and Athletics coaching. Along with heading the Guildford Athletics Program, Rebecca is the Prep Sport Administrator at Guildford Grammar School and runs her own private coaching business external to Guildford.

Rebecca’s passion for athletics is driven by her belief that the sport empowers young people to become the best versions of themselves by stepping outside their comfort zones and discovering what they are truly capable of. She believes that the most meaningful experiences, both in sport and in life, are built on courage, self-belief, and sustained effort, qualities that Athletics consistently demands. In a sport where all events are timed and measured with ability constantly on display, Athletics requires young people to be vulnerable and brave enough to try – to put themselves out there, even when there is a risk of failing. Participation builds resilience, patience, self-compassion, and an appreciation for the value of commitment. Long-term participation in an individual sport requires young people to look within themselves rather than relying on external rewards or motivation – a mindset that serves them well throughout life.

Working with young people is both a huge responsibility and a privilege, and Rebecca is proud of the high calibre coaching team she has brought together to lead the students at Guildford. Rebecca’s vision for Guildford Athletics is to continue to build a program that both students and coaches want to be part of. The goal is for everyone involved in Athletics at Guildford to look back on their experience with gratitude, and move forward as better athletes, coaches, and people.
